IP Catalog Update No. 7
In Progress
I'm slowly and sporadically working on the next versison of the IP Catalog,
containing (so far) the folloing changes compared with
Version 2021. This is being done in
a stream-of-consciousness order, but I'm happy to take request on specific
objects to update first.
New Designations
No new official variable star names have been given to IPs and
candidate IPs by the GCVS group so far, as far as I know.
However, there is one new-to-these-pages designation:
- We now use the name Paloma,
even though this is an unofficial nickname, for
1RXS J052430.2+424449.
The Paloma page also contains a new prefered spin period.
(2026 February 1)
Newly Added IPs/IP candidates/non-IPs
- Probable IPs
- Swift J0614.0+1709 is a
BAT-detected hard X-ray source with 5 hr, 1412 s, and
1530 s periods in optical photometry (likely to be the orbital,
the spin, and the beat periods). While it is likely to be an IP, an
independent confirmation (particularly the detection of the spin period
in X-rays) is highly desirable. This object page was announced on the
Update No. 6 page, but was accidentally
omitted from the Version 2021 catalog.
(2026 January 23)
- Swift J170800-402551.8 is a
Swift Deep Galactic Plane Survey source with a 13.1 min X-ray period
and a CV-like optical spectrum, so it is probably an IP.
(2026 January 14)
- Possible IPs
- V6609 Sgr has a strong credential
as an eclipsing, stream-fed IP from optical photometry, and is a bright
X-ray source. On the other hand, there are no published optical spectra
or X-ray timing studies. (2026 January 7)
- 2PBC J0800.5-3206 is a BAT
source whose optical couterpart is a CV with a blue continuum and
a strong He II 4686 line, but without published studies of dedicated
observations.
(2026 January 22)
- PBC J0826.3-7033 is a BAT
source. This may be an unusually X-ray luminous non-magnetic CV
or a magnetic CV; however, secure determination and identification
of the orbital and/or the spin periods is lacking.
(2026 January 8)
Changes in Confidence Level
- Newly confirmed systems
- IGR J18434-0508 has been
upgraded to "confirmed" following the X-ray detection of
a 304.4 s period, twice the previously reported optical period of 152.5 s.
(2026 January 15)
- Swift J0503.7-2819 has been
upgraded to "confirmed" following the detection of the true
spin period in X-ray data and in optical photometry. (Note that the
originally reported candidate spin period appears to have been a QPO.)
(2026 January 6)
- Newly classified as "probable"
- V1082 Sgr has been changed from
"doubtful" to "probable" following the detection of
periodically modulated optical circular polarization. While this is
hard to explain except as the spin period of an IP, the X-ray modulation
at a similar X-ray period was not persistent, and this period has never
been detected in optical photometry, both of which are puzzling.
(2026 January 25)
- Swift J0746.2-1611 has been
changed from "possible" to "probable" following the
TESS detection of likely spin and beat periods. However, the messy
nature of the X-ray power spectrum suggests that we don't fully understand
this system. (2026 January 29)
Other Substantive Changes
- For AH Men, the BAT detection
has been added, and the position and distance have been corrected
from those of position and distances corrected from that of
'14.0 mag. star 3" to the WNW' as VSX describes it.
(2026 January 25)
- The orbital period of V2487 Oph
has been added. (2026 January 26)
- YY Sex has been confirmed as
a polar via detection of strong circular polarization.
(2026 January 6)
- IGR J15038-6021 has a 1664 s
X-ray period. On the other hand, there are no published optical spectra
or optical timing studies. (2026 January 13)
