[Sara’s note: We are incredibly excited to introduce a new guest blogger, Elvia Ramirez-Vidal. She’ll be contributing a few bilingual blog posts to Blueshift while she’s here for the summer. This is Blueshift’s first foray into another language… but hopefully not our last! A translation to English follows the Spanish text.]

¡Hola, Internet! Soy Elvia, una interna nueva para el verano en Goddard Space Flight Center. Aunque no viaje lejos para llegar al Centro (yo vivo en Washington, DC) estando aquí ha sido una aventura en sí mismo. ¡En dos semanas yo he conocido un ganador del Premio Nobel, visto muchos proyectos en curso de evaluación, y he traducido un montón de fragmentos de medio sociales como Twitter, Facebook, y Flickr! Esta posición engloba todo lo anterior, donde yo hago traducciones/interpretaciones de Inglés a Español para el James Webb Space Telescope (¡y también unos mensajes bilingües muy impresionantes para Blueshift!).

Para mi, este trabajo es perfecto porque añade mi amor por los idiomas con mi amor por la astronomía todo en un paquete completo. Me gusta pensar que aunque estudie las Ciencias Políticas, un estudiante verdaderamente ferviente no deja de aprender cosas solo porque no esté debajo de su disciplina académica. Esta manera el estudiante podrá descubrir nuevas pasiones o reactivar algunas fascinaciones del pasado, como el hecho que desde que empecé la escuela primaria siempre me ha cautivado el universo, las estrellas, y los NUEVE planetas (te extraño Pluto).

¡Así que cuando tuve la oportunidad de participar en un Coloquio de Honores de Ciencias Físicas el semestre pasado de otoño en 2012 (que incluyó historia, la física, la filosofía, y la astronomía) no podía ni siquiera empezar a describir mi emoción! Yo aprendí todo desde la relación única entre Kepler y Brahe, Newton y la Sociedad Royale, física y cosmología Aristotélica vs Copernicana, e incluso algunos estudios sobre las implicaciones filosóficas que ocurren en la física cuántica. Hasta investigué el comienzo de NASA, todas las políticas y exploraciones que llevó a Eisenhower a fundar la agencia en el año 1958.

Añade dos más libros y tienes todas las lecturas para solo una clase… ¡ay!

Esto a la larga me llevó a Greenbelt para el verano. Yo tengo la oportunidad de no soló crecer como estudiante universitaria, pero para aprender y explorar a través del departamento de Ciencias Astrofísicas de Goddard. A través de seminarios, conferencias, y reuniones espero empujar mi frontera final más lejos que nunca y aprender sobre la materia y energía oscura, los cuásares, la ciencia detrás del Big Bang y cuan atrozmente vasto el universo realmente es. A pesar que no voy a poder viajar al espacio este verano, una cita por el astronauta Edgar Mitchell siempre me viene a la mente:

“En el espacio exterior se desarrolla instantáneamente una conciencia global, una orientación de gente, una insatisfacción intensa con el estado del mundo, y una compulsión de hacer algo en su respecto. Desde allí en la Luna, politicas internacionales se ven tan mezquino”

“Para aquellos que han visto la Tierra desde el espacio y para los que irán, la experiencia sin duda cambia su perspectiva. Las cosas que compartimos en nuestro mundo son mucho más valiosas que las que nos separan” – Donald Williams, USA

Yo creo que al reconocer lo anterior, un político pueda conducir con éxito globalmente. Quiero decir, es típico para cualquier persona estudiando el espacio que piense, “hay, si somos pequeños en perspectivo” pero en un nivel filosófico y político, me gustaría pensar que debe haber otra manera en cual la humanidad podrá prosperar junto; eso se puede lograr en entendiendo plenamente nuestra escala en comparación con el universo. Comprendiendo esta escala de la vida real me ayudará cumplir uno de mis objetivos más fundamentales y personales; eso es en convertirme en una ciudadana activa del mundo quien no sólo espera el avance de su país pero si no, el avance de nuestra civilización enteramente.

Hello internet! I’m Elvia, a new intern here at Goddard Space Flight Center for the summer. I didn’t travel all too far to get here (living in Washington, DC) but being here has been a journey in itself. I have managed to meet a Nobel Laureate, seen many work-in-progress projects being tested, and have already translated a bunch of social media excerpts for Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr – all this in a matter of two weeks! The internship position I have encompasses all of the above as I do translations/interpretations from English to Spanish for the James Webb Space Telescope (and some very awesome bilingual posts for Blueshift!).

This for me is perfect because it adds my love of language and love for astronomy all in one package. I like to believe that although I am a Political Science major, a true fervent student doesn’t stop learning things even if it’s not under their academic discipline. This way you can uncover new passions or kick-start some fascinations from the past, like the fact that since I started elementary school I have always been enthralled with the universe, stars, and the NINE planets (I miss you, Pluto).

So when I had the opportunity to join an Honors Physical Science Colloquium class last Fall 2012 semester that included history, physics, philosophy, and astronomy, I couldn’t even begin to describe my excitement! I learned everything from Kepler’s unique relationship with Brahe, Newton and the Royal Society, Aristotelian versus Copernican physics and cosmology, and even some studies on the philosophical implications that occur through quantum physics. I even researched the beginnings of NASA, all the politics and exploration that led Eisenhower to found the agency back in 1958.

Add two more books and you have all the reading accomplished for my one class, yay!

This eventually brought me to Greenbelt for the summer. I have the opportunity to not only grow as a college student, but learn and explore through the Astrophysics Science Division at Goddard. Through seminars, lectures, and meetings I hope to push my final frontier further than ever before and learn about dark matter and energy, quasars, the science behind the Big Bang and just how excruciatingly vast the universe truly is. Although I may not travel to space this summer, a quote by astronaut Edgar Mitchell always comes to mind:

“In outer space you develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty.”

I believe by acknowledging the above, a politico can successfully lead globally. I mean, it’s typical for any person learning about space to think “man, we really are tiny in perspective” but in a philosophical and political level, I like to think there has to be another way that humanity can thrive together; that is, by fully understanding our scale in comparison to the Universe. Comprehending this real-life scale will help me in one of my ultimate personal goals in life and that is to become an active global citizen who not only looks forward to the advancement of one’s country but I look forward to the advancement of our civilization as a whole.
