Round 2 - Data Sets
Round 2 is completed. Find the key files here
There are only two challenge elements in Round 2. Challenge 2.1 is a full-scale galactic model of WD+WD binaries, while Challenge 2.2 includes this as well as several binary black hole mergers and EMRI events.
The Round 2 data sets are based on exactly the same LISA model (except that the data sets are now include 2 years of data) and source waveform models used in Round 1. More details about the Round 2 challenge specifications are described in the proceedings of the recent GWDAW11 workshop.
The deadline for submitting blind challenge entries for Round 2 will be June 15, 2007.(Details are here)
The Task Force has identified four restricted frequency bands on which analysis should concentrate
first, and over which the evaluation of responses will be carried out in much more depth:
these windows are 0.2985 mHz < f < 0.3015 mHz, 0.9985 mHz < f < 1.0015 mHz,
2.9985 mHz < f < 3.0015 mHz, and 5.9985 mHz < f < 6.0015 mHz.
Also note that Challenge 1.3 on EMRI's is being administered concurrently with Round 2, and the data are also available below.
Note: The data were regenerated with new seeds and reposted on March 2, 2007. Please use data from after that date.
Challenge 1.3 - EMRIs
Though logically part of Round 1, the EMRI challenge was planned for later June 2007 conclusion. In preparation for Round 2 duration, the MLDC Task Force has redesigned the data sets to overcome some shortcomings, and to better corespond to Round 2. Each of the 5 elements of Challenge 1.3 includes precisely one EMRI source in a ~2-yr long (to be precise: 2^22 data points with cadence 15 seconds) data set. For each case, the EMRI parameters more reduced mass, spin of the central black hole, eccentricity and duration are drawn as follows: mu/M in U[9.5, 10.5], S/M2 in U[0.5, 0.7] time at plunge in U[2^21, 2^22] x 15 sec, and eccentricity at plunge in U[0.15, 0.25]. The mass of the central black hole varies.
Challenge 1.3.1
Central mass M/10^7 in U[0.95, 1.05] solar masses. Est SNR in U[40,110].

Challenge 2.1 - Galactic Foreground
A ~2-yr long (to be precise: 2^22 data points with cadence 15 seconds) data set containing:
- Radiation from galactic binaries generated using a population synthesis code (~ 30 Million sources) - radiation from binaries is (as in Challenge 1) exactly monochromatic (in the source reference frame)
- 25 Verification binaries (similar to Challenge 1.1.2).

Challenge 2.2 - The Whole Enchilada
A ~2-yr long (to be precise: 2^22 data points with cadence 15 seconds) long data set containing:
- Radiation from galactic binaries generated using a population synthesis code (~ 30 Million sources) - radiation from binaries is (as in challenge 1) exactly monochromatic (in the source reference frame)
- 25 Verification binaries (exactly the same frequency and sky location as in challenge 2.1)
- 4-6 signals from MBHBs.
The BBH signals will the following (note that the SNR quoted here is only for the inspiral and assume coherent matched-filtering using 1 TDI observable):
-
A loud (SNR ~ 2000) signal (with in-spiral in band, that is from f = 0.1 mHz, lasting about 1 week) and coalescing 60 to 120 days after the beginning of the observations
-
A moderate-to-low SNR (~ 20) signal with coalescence between 750 and 780 days from the beginning of the observations
The BBH signals will also include 2 of the following 4
-
A loud (SNR ~ 1000) signal coalescing between 180 and 720 days from beginning of observations
-
A loud (SNR ~ 200) signal coalescing between 180 and 720 days from beginning of observations
-
A loud (SNR ~ 100) signal with coalescence taking place between 495 and 585 days from the start of the observations
-
A low SNR (~ 10) signal with coalescence taking place between 810 nad 840 days from the beginning of the observations
- 5 EMRIs of the type considered in challenge 1, with SNR distributed between 30 and 100 and parameters: mu/M in U[9.5, 10.5], S/M2 in U[0.5, 0.7] time at plunge in U[2^21, 2^22] x 15 sec, and eccentricity at plunge in U[0.15, 0.25]. The mass of the central black hole for the five EMRI's are as follows:
- one source with M/10^7 in U[0.95, 1.05] solar masses
- two sources with M/10^6 in U[4.75, 5.25] solar masses
- two sources with M/10^6 in U[0.95, 1.05] solar masses
