XAssist is a package written mostly in Python that (completely) automates the analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton data. It uses HEASOFT and either CIAO or XMM-SAS for the underlying processing steps including source detection. "Stamp" images of individual sources are fit with a simple spatial model where the model includes nearby sources so that they can be taken into account. Source with enough counts are fit with a simple power-law spectrum using XSPEC. A good example data set is
this Chandra observation of NGC 253.
