ASD Social Media Request

Fill out this form to suggest content that the ASD Social Media Team could highlight on our NASA Universe Twitter and Facebook accounts. If this request is related to a paper (or other timely release), please complete this form as soon after your paper is submitted as you can (at least one week before the publication date, optimally more) and provide as much information as possible so that we may assess your request promptly.

Types of content we typically feature:

  • Astrophysics NASA.gov features
  • Mission milestones and new images
  • Significant science discoveries
  • Interesting facts
  • NASA visualizations
  • Astrophysics science/mission explainers
  • Content tied to national events or holidays

Content turnaround time: To ensure high quality and manage our coverage of NASA-wide astrophysics content, our team is currently working on a 4-6 week lead-time for content on our editorial calendar. Posts for NASA Universe go through a set iterative review process that includes scientist approval, fact-checking, and editorial review, which also adds to the turnaround time.

Here are our minimum turnaround times for different types of submissions - but more lead time means our team can create more creative and engaging content, so please submit your request as early as possible!

  • Retweet without additional text: minimum 1 business day
  • Submitted text and image (including text for quote-tweets): minimum 3 business days
  • Text written by our team (including quote-tweets): minimum 5-7 business days

NASA Universe’s voice: Our accounts are geared towards a science-interested non-technical public audience, so we avoid jargon and undefined complex scientific concepts. We may need to edit submitted content to match this voice, or to address current events/climate.

Retweets, tags, links and hashtags: As an official NASA account, we are conscientious about who/what we associate with our account through retweets, tagged accounts, links to external content, follows and/or hashtags. These connections can imply endorsement of viewpoints, commercial services or other content that are inappropriate (or even illegal) for a government account. Verified social accounts from NASA and other government agencies are generally safe, but other organizational, commercial and personal accounts can be problematic - we will work with you on these issues.

Scheduling: Please let us know if your release date is flexible or attached to something firm like a journal publication or media feature. We will do our best to accommodate scheduling requests, but may need to adjust the date based on higher-priority content on the calendar, agency priorities, current events, etc.

You will receive an email copy of your responses, as will Sara Mitchell, Kelly Ramos, and Barb Mattson.
