Awesomeness Round-up – 6/14/10

Here are some of the interesting things we’ve seen on the internet this week! And if you find stuff you think we would like – tweet it, comment about it, send it in! We may work with satellites, but we don’t have eyes everywhere.

Watch the short film “Spacecraft Chamber of Horrors” – we thought this dovetailed nicely with the tour we gave you last week of the cleanroom facilities! After the Hubble Servicing Mission ended, James Webb Space Telescope stuff moved in. Our friend Kevin Boyce is in the video – we interviewed him for our “First Light, Last Paycheck?” podcast!

“Spacecraft Chamber of Horrors” was one of the short films featured in the 2009 Goddard Film Festival. Want to see more? You can watch all of the films online! Here is the playlist.

Watch out, black holes are everywhere! Spaghettification is serious business.

Australian artist Peter Hennessey builds large wooden models – they are truly impressive. He spent three months building a full-scale model of the Hubble Space Telescope. (Hubble is about the size of a school bus, for reference.) This site has a lot of photos of it.

We also found this video about his Hubble model:

This picture of the James Webb Space Telescope full-scale model was taken by Bobby Bradley at the World Science Festival last week. It’s a High Dynamic Range photo!

You’ve heard of Stonehenge, but how about Manhattanhenge? Twice a year, the sunset aligns perfectly with the east-west streets of Manhattan, kind of like how Stonehenge is aligned with sun during the solstices.) It looks like a really amazing phenomena. There are pictures of the recent event on this blog.

Astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson has a great explanation of Manhattanhenge and some more photos on the Hayden Planetarium site. This article also tells you how (and when) to best see this phenomena for yourself. If you’ll be in NYC on July 12th, why not try?

If you do a search for “Manhattanhenge” on Flickr, you’ll find amazing things!
