||||| Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 01:32 pm What does it feel like going through re-entry? | |
||||| Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 10:42 am On re-entry day the astronauts get dressed in their orange space suits and get suited into their respective seats (four on the flight deck, three in the mid deck). When ready to de-orbit, the shuttle flies tail-first and bay to earth. They then close the Bay Doors, and fire the big OMS engines, which marks the end of zero-G for the crew. The strong retro burn slows the shuttle down, dropping it out of earth's orbit. They then do a pitch maneuver which brings them head first, and bay to space. They fly this attitude to landing. As they land, the G forces start building, and there will be a bright glow from the windows. The cabin gets warm from the heat of re-entry, and there may be turbulence like an airliner. http://www.edcheung.com/job/sm3b/sm3b.htm | |
