Hey I am a solar power enthusiast and I would really like to know the details on those panels going up on this bird!
Does anyone know details of construction, efficiency etc. too?

You can find out more information on the solar panels by checking our Media Guide and Fact Sheet

Mechanical Systems here. We think about $25 million. Each Iridium panel (8 + 1 spare) is $1M. Then you add substructure, integration, testing, booms, drive motors, dampers, etc. Thats lot of Euros. The SA's were made by our friends at ESA.

Just wait one minute! The Solar Arrays were built at GSFC by the HST Project. Our European partners provided the Solar Array Drive Electronics (SADE) that point the Solar Arrays. These electronics are similar to the ones that drive the existing solar panels.

The entire new solar panel project cost about $19M.
