Cycle 6 Information

GALEX Project at Caltech

Fields that pass both tests described below are expected to be safe for GALEX to observe.

Please note: For Cycle 4 we are not requesting .xml files, so please ignore comments on output pages about .xml files.

1) Bright Stars: The GALEX Brightness Checker determines what nearby stars are bright enough to threaten the detectors, even if the stars are outside the GALEX field of view. The top output table gives each star's location and separation from the field center, and estimates the brightness (in counts) in each GALEX band.

2) Total Field: The Brightness Checker also estimates the total brightness (in counts) expected in a 1.2 degree GALEX field centered at the position you give. The estimated total flux includes the total contribution from bright stars (details) as well as the background expected from diffuse galactic emission (details) and assumed to come from zodiacal light (details).

Note: There are several situations where your field may be expected to fail these checks - further information on these may be found here.

Note: There are also cases where your field will pass the safety checks given here but your observing data may be compromised. Further information may be found here.

Please be patient after clicking "Request Data," as it may take a minute to compute the models.

Coordinate System.
