Deep Survey for Obscured AGN

BeppoSAX has measured soft - hard spectra of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies:

BeppoSAX Spectra (MECS and PDS) of NGC6240 and NGC 1068, two bright Seyfert 2 galaxies

BeppoSAX Spectra (MECS and PDS) of NGC6240 and NGC 1068
(Vignati et al 1999, astro-ph/9908253)

EXIST would conduct the first all-sky survey for obscured AGN such as these bright Seyfert 2 systems measured by BeppoSAX, which directly show the very large absorbing column absorbing (and partially fluorescing) the soft x-ray spectra below ~10 keV. More than 3000 such systems could be identified and studied with EXIST, and their contribution to both the diffuse hard x-ray and (indirectly) the IR luminosity density of the universe could be measured.
