Richard Swinbank graduated from Cambridge University in 1978 with a 1st class honours degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics. Swinbank then joined the United Kingdom Meteorological Office (equivalent to the National Weather Service in the USA). At the Met Office, Swinbank worked in a number of different areas - on dynamical meteorology, numerical modelling and data assimilation. Swinbank was responsible for the development of the Stratospheric Data Assimilation system, which was used to analyse meteorological data for the NASA Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) project. In 1993, Swinbank became head of the Middle Atmosphere Group, responsible for stratospheric modeling and data assimilation. In October 1997, Swinbank came to work at the Data Assimilation Office at NASA Goddard as a Visiting Fellow, and he is currently working on developments to the DAO GEOS-2 Data Assimilation System.
