XRS-2 PhotosLaunch preparations →The 34 Meter Dish at Night

The spidery substructure of the parabolic dish sears into the blackness of night with the brightness of many million candlepower mercury lights, silhouetting the lazy fronds of a small palm foreground palm tree. (70K JPEG)

The antennas are lit at night when in use, so that the operators can verify (via a video display) that they are working correctly. As an added bonus, it looks really cool when they're lit like this. This is the 34 meter antenna, which will be used to communicate with Astro-E2.
