XRS-2 PhotosArrival at USC →Astro-E2 in the Clean Room

White-clad clean-room engineers adjust cabling and plumbing around the bottom of the 5-meter tall spacecraft. (49K JPEG)

The spacecraft starts out in the clean room, for the initial testing. Later it will be moved across the hall to a clean booth, where it will be mounted on the third stage. Finally it will move to the launch tower and the rocket will be complete. Yes, those are disposable diapers under the shiny metal helium vent tube. The tube gets very cold at times, and lots of water condenses on it, so we need something to keep it from dripping on the floor.
