This is a summary of the galactic bulge scan which occurred 07 Feb
2000.

For those of you who are getting this for the first time, we typically
have a two orbit observation which consists of both scanning and
resting at endpoints.  The endpoints of the scans are mandated by
operations people to be of a certain minimum duration, and are
typically optimized so that they lie on point sources of interest.
Still, the scans are almost a perfect sawtooth pattern.

We have typically had two observations per week, and alternate the
scan pattern.  Yesterday's observation had scans primarily in the
north-south direction, which I may call the "regular scan"; the next
scan will be primarily east-west, which I often call the "cross scan."
With orthogonal scans it's more straightforward to get a handle on the
diffuse emission and refine source positions.

The page is meant for collaborators' internal use, and does not
necessarily have the most up-to-date or publication quality results.

Details follow:

 * Any fluxes I mention are of course approximate, in the 2-10 keV
   band, and scaled to 5 PCUs.

 * It probably goes without saying that SAX 1808 has become active
   again.  After spending all of last year below a half a mCrab, it's
   now at about 10 mCrab -- a boomer by bulge scan standards.

   It's a little bit frustrating since we could have detected the
   source a factor of ~20 fainter.  I would argue that the ASM trigger
   which led to PCA observations was dubious at best, but it did lead
   to PCA observations that paid off in the end.

 * XTE J1723-376, which had a very *marginal* suggestion of high
   frequency QPOs last year, is active again, although faint, at about
   1.5 mCrab.

 * KS 1731-260 is at about 5 mCrab, which is about a factor of five
   fainter than I have ever seen it in the bulge scans.

 * Since this is the first observation after a hiatus, here is a
   status update on various sources, which don't necessarily warrant
   detailed comments:

     1E1740.7-2942 - near the low end of its 20-30 mCrab range.
     4U 1711-34    - currently not detected
     4U 1728-34    - near the lower end of its 50-200 mCrab range.
     4U 1820-30    - near the middle of its 100-500 mCrab range.
     GRS 1747-312  - not in outburst
     GS 1826-238   - at a new high of about 41 mCrab
     GX 3+1        - at a new high of about 32 mCrab
     GX 5-1        - near the low end of its 1-1.5 Crab range
     Rapid burster - not detected
     R 1832-330    - near low end of its 5-10 mCrab range
     SLX 1735-269  - at its steady-state flux of ~9 mCrab
     XTE J1710-281 - not detected
     XTE J1743-363 - detected
     XTE J1819-254 - not detected (diffuse emission confusion)

 * I am amazed, but there are no previously unidentified sources
   present.
