Craig Markwardt writes: Here is a report of the galactic bulge scans for 19 Oct 1999, day 2117. These scans were primarily in the east-west direction. * a new source, designated XTE J1739-285, appeared in the last observation. The fitted flux is 760 ct/s/5PCU (2-13 keV). Its best fit position is RA=264.981, DEC=-28.4995, with an uncertainty of 5-10 arcmin. There are nearby potentially confusing sources, SLX 1737-282 and 4U 1735-28. The closest is SLX; however this source was already in my model and does not fit the observations by itself. The 4U source is farther away (0.3 deg), too far in my opinion to be this new source. There are a few ROSAT sources a similar distance away. * a faint source I forgot to mention last week, designated XTE J1805-295, reached a peak flux of 33+/-3 ct/s. The best-fit position was RA=271.4045, DEC=-29.5209. Again, there are no compelling nearby known sources. This was a faint source which was undetectable in this most recent observation. * we observed a burst from either the rapid burster or 4U 1728-34. Given that we have seen bursts from the rapid burster before, and it's just been in outburst, it appears to be the most likely candidate. Peak flux was 6300 ct/s/5PCU (2-13 keV). * the fitted flux of the rapid burster itself has declined to about 140 ct/s. * GRS 1747-312 (= Terzan 6) reappeared at about 145 ct/s (compared to 35 ct/s last week). This happened because we caught the tail end of an eclipse last week! (6% probability by chance) * XTE J1819-254 has remained virtually inert since its outburst a few weeks ago. Craig
