NASA at SXSW 2014

It’s that time of year again – for the South by Southwest music, film, & tech festival in Austin, Texas. As you might recall from last year, we had the giant full-scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope and a huge tent full of information about the mission.

Though we don’t have the full-scale model there this year, we still have a JWST and Hubble booth at the Gaming Expo near the Palmer Center, which is free and open to the public. There are photos, videos, livestreams, schedules, tweets and more at the JWST/Hubble-centric SXSW portal: http://go.nasa.gov/JWSTlive.

JWST and Hubble are at SXSW 2014!

NASA (aside from having another booth) will be talking astronauts, climate science, asteroids and more (besides JWST and Hubble) at #SXSW! Details: http://go.nasa.gov/1njlCSA

At 7pm CST TONIGHT, March 6, Dr. Frank Summers will be giving a talk on Truth and Beauty in Astronomy Visualization on Thursday night. It’s also being livestreamed and if you miss it, don’t worry, you can watch on YouTube! Here is more information about his talk.

Dr. Frank Summers at SXSW

After Dr. Frank Summer’s talk tonight, March 6, there is a public meet-up at 8:30 pm. Chat with JWST and Hubble astronomers and ask questions about the universe! Details about the meet-up: http://bit.ly/1fI4zTH

Astronomy After Hours SXSW

There will be a very special tweet-chat, Saturday, March 8 at 10am CST/11am EST. Since we can’t all participate in the #JWST and #Hubble panel discussion “First Signs: Finding Life on Other Planets” at SXSW, we’re having a tweet-chat where you can ask our scientists questions about exoplanets, life and the how the universe formed!

Just tweet your question on the hashtag #JWSTfirst – @astraughnomer, @jasonkalirai, & @albertoconti will be responding to questions. We’ll be retweeting things on our JWST account: @NASAWebbTelescp.

First Signs: Finding Life on Other Planets - SXSW

There will be a First Signs: Finding Life on Other Planets discussion panel Sunday March 9, 12:30pm CST. This panel is only open to SXSW attendees.

Dr. Amber Straughn, who will be on this panel, will be giving two other free public talks. First is “Hubble and Beyond: A Quarter Century of Science & Art from the Hubble Space Telescope.” This will be taking place on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 7:30pm at Art.Science.Gallery

She will also be speaking at Nerd Night on Wednesday March 12 at 7:30 CST.

We will add to this post if new scheduling information becomes available!
