Notes on analyzing ASCA data using XSELECT

Extensive descriptions on how to use XSELECT on ASCA data are available in the ABC guide. See in particular section 6.6, chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, and section 11.3.

The new automated response generation is not documented in the ASCA ABC guide. After extracting a spectrum the command save spec resp=yes will trigger response generation for the spectrum. For SIS data the task sisrmg will be run to make the rmf and ascaarf will be run to make the arf. By default ascaarf will be operated in its point-source mode where the source is assumed to be at the center of the region from which spectrum was extracted. If you require ascaarf's extended source option you should set resp=extend. For GIS data XSELECT will attempt to copy the appropriate rmf from the local CALDB and will run ascaarf to make the arf. The scripts that run the rmf and arf generation are xsl_asca_sis_makeresp and xsl_asca_gis_makeresp.
